We're still waiting for a bright, shiny new banner but I've been familiarising myself with Wordpress and posting to the new site in recent days, so if you wondered why my posting frequency had dropped off, that's why. Corporate Engagement has been going since February 2004 (itself replacing an original blog I started with in November 2003 on the Blogger platform). Moving to Crikey is the next step in my blogging adventure and an exciting step it is too. Crikey is the first media site in Australia to fully embrace bloggers as bloggers rather than as journalists doing a bit of blogging on the side or outsiders being brought into provide some additional content. The Crikey blogs are real blogs managed as blogs by real bloggers. That's BIG I think. I hope other media sites, particularly the ABC and SBS, might eventually do the same. (update: I should also mention that Wotnews, formerly Plugger, is also very blogger friendly too). Aggregating blogs in this way and promoting them off a media site (although not an MSM platform) will give us bloggers access to much larger audiences and it will introduce many new readers to the potential of blogging. McCain just badly misstated the history of Pakistan. For someone claiming extensive foreign policy knowledge, this is simply not acceptable. McCain said Pakistan was a failed state before President Musharraf came to power. That is not true. Musharraf took power in a military coup in 1999 when he diposed Nawaz Sharif - who recently participated in the latest election. The coup followed the 1999 war in Kashmir with India and was due to a power struggle with Sharif, not due to Pakistan being a "failed state." The United States did not welcome the Musharraf coup. Twenty-four percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-seven percent saw it as a draw. Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight. Thirty-two percent said their opinion of McCain got better. Insider Advantage / Poll PositionOpinions on who won the debate split almost evenly: 42 percent said they thought Barack Obama won the debate, 41 percent thought John McCain prevailed, and 17 percent were undecided.The poll of 411 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus five percent. The results were weighted by age, race, gender and political affiliation.CNN/Opinion Research Corp. found that 51 percent thought that Obama won, while 38 percent thought McCain did. Respondents were generally impressed: 57 percent said Obama did better than expected and 20 percent said worse, while 60 percent said McCain did better than expected and 20 percent said worse. As a corporate blogger I rarely post "off topic". There's a reason for that, and a reason why I'm doing so now. The core reason for doing so now is that it's a subject that's near and dear to me, having spent the majority of the past eight years writing and blogging in publishing and on the corporate side of the table, and I see far too many posts out there offering advice about blogging that's focused solely on "getting more hits".聽 While that might be sound advice for personal blogs, it's off-key when it comes to corporate efforts. There is a belief, and it's wrong, that more is better - whether it's more posts or more hits - when it comes to corporate blogging. You don't pull out of a debate when you're behind in the polls and your opponent is gaining momentum every day. Unless, you're hoping for a circuit-breaker. The Palin effect has washed through the polls and now they're starting to reflect a new campaign on the economy and that favours Obama because he's way ahead of McCain on the economy with voters. The McCain camp has come under intense criticisms for its lies and its reluctance to face media questioning. The first debate was due to be on foreign policy and that's McCain's strength so he could have hoped for a bounce if he bested Obama in the debate. That would have been dampened by the current focus on the economic crisis, including Bush's address to the nation later today. Plus there's another bind for McCain. Bush needs his support to get the bail-out package through but McCain can't be seen to be in lockstep with the incredibly unpopular Bush. McCain can't win this election if he looks like a mainstream maverick, that's why he has been reluctant to sign up to a package that is drawing a lot of criticism in mainstream and among all those people who have lost their homes and jobs (why bailout CEOs with million-dollar packages - that's suicidal for McCain). - Corporate Engagement - Http://Trevorcook.Typepad.Com/Weblog Corporate Engagement Corporate Engagement Trevor Cook on public relations, social media and politics Corporate Engagement finds a new home at Crikey Blogs I am pleased to announce that Corporate Engagement has been moved, in it's entirety, to the recently created Crikey Blogs platform. We're still waiting for a bright, shiny new banner but I've been familiarising myself with Wordpress and posting to the new site in recent days, so if you wondered why my posting frequency had dropped off, that's why. Corporate Engagement has been going since February 2004 (itself replacing an original blog I started with in November 2003 on the Blogger platform). Moving to Crikey is the next step in my blogging adventure and an exciting step it is too. Crikey is the first media site in Australia to fully embrace bloggers as bloggers rather than as journalists doing a bit of blogging on the side or outsiders being brought into provide some additional content. The Crikey blogs are real blogs managed as blogs by real bloggers. That's BIG I think. I hope other media sites, particularly the ABC and SBS, might eventually do the same. (update: I should also mention that Wotnews, formerly Plugger, is also very blogger friendly too). Aggregating blogs in this way and promoting them off a media site (although not an MSM platform) will give us bloggers access to much larger audiences and it will introduce many new readers to the potential of blogging. So here goes, I hope you will drop by to the new home of Corporate Engagement and give me your feedback. And if you have any suggestions for posts, please drop me an email ... McCain just badly misstated the history of Pakistan. For someone claiming extensive foreign policy knowledge, this is simply not acceptable. McCain said Pakistan was a failed state before President Musharraf came to power. That is not true. Musharraf took power in a military coup in 1999 when he diposed Nawaz Sharif - who recently participated in the latest election. The coup followed the 1999 war in Kashmir with India and was due to a power struggle with Sharif, not due to Pakistan being a "failed state." The United States did not welcome the Musharraf coup. Twenty-four percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-seven percent saw it as a draw. Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight. Thirty-two percent said their opinion of McCain got better. Insider Advantage / Poll PositionOpinions on who won the debate split almost evenly: 42 percent said they thought Barack Obama won the debate, 41 percent thought John McCain prevailed, and 17 percent were undecided.The poll of 411 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus five percent. The results were weighted by age, race, gender and political affiliation.CNN/Opinion Research Corp. found that 51 percent thought that Obama won, while 38 percent thought McCain did. Respondents were generally impressed: 57 percent said Obama did better than expected and 20 percent said worse, while 60 percent said McCain did better than expected and 20 percent said worse. As a corporate blogger I rarely post "off topic". There's a reason for that, and a reason why I'm doing so now. The core reason for doing so now is that it's a subject that's near and dear to me, having spent the majority of the past eight years writing and blogging in publishing and on the corporate side of the table, and I see far too many posts out there offering advice about blogging that's focused solely on "getting more hits".聽 While that might be sound advice for personal blogs, it's off-key when it comes to corporate efforts. There is a belief, and it's wrong, that more is better - whether it's more posts or more hits - when it comes to corporate blogging. You don't pull out of a debate when you're behind in the polls and your opponent is gaining momentum every day. Unless, you're hoping for a circuit-breaker. The Palin effect has washed through the polls and now they're starting to reflect a new campaign on the economy and that favours Obama because he's way ahead of McCain on the economy with voters. The McCain camp has come under intense criticisms for its lies and its reluctance to face media questioning. The first debate was due to be on foreign policy and that's McCain's strength so he could have hoped for a bounce if he bested Obama in the debate. That would have been dampened by the current focus on the economic crisis, including Bush's address to the nation later today. Plus there's another bind for McCain. Bush needs his support to get the bail-out package through but McCain can't be seen to be in lockstep with the incredibly unpopular Bush. McCain can't win this election if he looks like a mainstream maverick, that's why he has been reluctant to sign up to a package that is drawing a lot of criticism in mainstream and among all those people who have lost their homes and jobs (why bailout CEOs with million-dollar packages - that's suicidal for McCain). The core reason for doing so now is that it's a subject that's near and dear to me, having spent the majority of the past eight years writing and blogging in publishing and on the corporate side of the table, and I see far too many posts out there offering advice about blogging that's focused solely on "getting more hits".聽 While that might be sound advice for personal blogs, it's off-key when it comes to corporate efforts. There is a belief, and it's wrong, that more is better - whether it's more posts or more hits - when it comes to corporate blogging. You don't pull out of a debate when you're behind in the polls and your opponent is gaining momentum every day. Unless, you're hoping for a circuit-breaker. The Palin effect has washed through the polls and now they're starting to reflect a new campaign on the economy and that favours Obama because he's way ahead of McCain on the economy with voters. The McCain camp has come under intense criticisms for its lies and its reluctance to face media questioning. The first debate was due to be on foreign policy and that's McCain's strength so he could have hoped for a bounce if he bested Obama in the debate. That would have been dampened by the current focus on the economic crisis, including Bush's address to the nation later today. Plus there's another bind for McCain. Bush needs his support to get the bail-out package through but McCain can't be seen to be in lockstep with the incredibly unpopular Bush. McCain can't win this election if he looks like a mainstream maverick, that's why he has been reluctant to sign up to a package that is drawing a lot of criticism in mainstream and among all those people who have lost their homes and jobs (why bailout CEOs with million-dollar packages - that's suicidal for McCain). Online. #1 Lost Premieres Wednesday, January 21 @8pm on ABC Can I just say? I was doing just fine. Seriously, I have made it through like seven-and-a-half months of Lost hiatus hell without actively thinking about the fact that ABC has made the break like nine freaking months long. Sure, every once in a while, one of those pesky unanswered questions would come up & taunt me, but I was doing FINE. Then, December rolled around & ABC started with the relentless teaser promotion campaign & it got to the point where you couldn鈥檛 watch anything on ABC without The Fray mercilessly assaulting your eardrums. And then I got the Lost season 4 DVDs from my parentals for Christmas, & I have this uncontrollable urge to watch them all the time. Also, around this time is when ABC decided to fork over screeners for the first two episodes of season 5 to critics & bloggers, which meant I would spend the next week scouring every media platform I could find that would let go of a tiny piece of the puzzle. All of which means I am suddenly completely immersed in Lost & I CAN鈥橳 STAND IT! And now, it鈥檚 finally here & I鈥檝e blocked off my Wednesday for this & OMG can this possibly live up to expectations? Online. #3 Burn Notice Premieres Thursday, January 22 @10pm on USA More than any other show on TV, Burn Notice is a summer show. I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 really not that smart a move for USA to cut the season in half. But nonetheless, I can鈥檛 say I鈥檓 not thrilled that we鈥檒l be getting fresh episodes this month. Interestingly, I wasn鈥檛 actually watching Burn Notice when I realized it was not just a nice distraction from the summer TV hiatus, but actually a great show. I was watching In Plain Sight, another quirky crime-related drama on USA. The reason I thought of Burn Notice when I was watching it is I kept thinking, if only this show had some decent writing. It could be so much better. And if you think about it, Burn Notice & In Plain Sight are not so different. It鈥檚 not like Burn Notice is more complex & deep, or even that the acting is better (although I do prefer Jeffrey Donovan鈥檚 unbelievably cool smile & Bruce Campbell鈥檚 laid back charm to irritable, exasperating Mary McCormack or anyone else on IPS besides maybe Frederick Weller鈥檚 dorkily awesome Marshall Mann). It comes down to the writing & Burn Notice鈥檚 writing is much, much better. In fact, it鈥檚 more clever, more witty than a lot of what鈥檚 on network TV as well. I can鈥檛 wait for it to come back. Are you as good at giving credit as blame? How do you react when you ask somebody to do something and they do it differently than you thought (or hoped) they would?</p> <p>What does accountability mean to you? How important is it? Where and on what in your business do you hold yourself accountable? How much do you deal with accountability for team members, employees 鈥 vendors? <img src="http://timsstuff.s3.amazonaws.com/blogs/Accountability_small.jpg" alt="" height="222" align="right" /></p> <p>If you <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3A+accountability">look up definitions</a>, you get a lot about politics, and relatively little about management. I wonder why not? My personal favorite definition is: Being responsible to somebody for some activity. Doesn鈥檛 that sound like it should be management?</p> <blockquote><p>Accountability breeds responsibility.鈥 Stephen R. Covey</p></blockquote> <ul>鈥淚t is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.鈥 Moliere</ul> <p>Why accountability now? Because business has changed so much, and has so much more change coming. Last week I posted on the tension between working in the office and working anywhere and everywhere else. That鈥檚 just one factor.</p> <ul> <li>Consider how accountability has revolutionized marketing, particularly advertising, in the last 10 years. With tools pioneered by the rise of Google, we have pay per click, click rates, conversion rates, and measurability. Before the web that was very hard to get.</li> <li>In my own years building a business, watching the planning process and how businesses grow, I鈥檝e come to believe in an <a href="http://blog.timberry.com/2008/09/the-accountabil.html">accountability dip</a> that鈥檚 a natural function of growing a company from the early 2-5 people stage to the growth and organizational stage with 25-50 people.</li> <li>We don鈥檛 have a lot of systems for accountability. I think it鈥檚 supposed to be built into the planning process, pivoting around metrics, tracking results, and 鈥 here鈥檚 the hard part 鈥 giving people both sides (credit and/or blame) of the results.</li> <li>We鈥檙e sort of getting used to accountability in phone calls. It鈥檚 called recording; it happens a lot, or at least I get that phone message we all hear, 鈥渢his call may be recorded.鈥 I wonder how much really happens with recorded calls.</li> <li>What about accountability in email? We tend to treat email as personal, so that looking at somebody鈥檚 email output, even reading emails, seems obtrusive. Nobody wants to be big brother. On the other hand, email is your business, it鈥檚 legally evidence in a lawsuit if it comes to that, it鈥檚 your company鈥檚 face to the public.</li> <li>Accountability on the web, perhaps? Time spent reading blogs, watching twitter, minding LinkedIn or Facebook. Do you know somebody whose Facebook updates contradict what they tell their boss? Is instant messaging part of normal work flow? How would we measure that, and track results.</li> </ul> <p>I posted <a href="http://smallbiztrends.com/2007/11/big-brother-in-small-business.html">here</a> about a year ago on the big brother aspects of monitoring employees in small business, particularly what people are doing with their web browsers. Lately I鈥檝e been spending a lot more time in my blog reader and twitter. Is that good business? Am I accountable to anybody for the time spent on social media? Does it relate to what my company wants me to do? Those are good questions. They lead to this issue of accountability in the new world.</p> <p>Conclusion? - Trevor Cook - Http://Trevorcook.Typepad.Com/Weblog/ Trevor Cook Trevor Cook Corporate Engagement finds a new home at Crikey Blogs I am pleased to announce that Corporate Engagement has been moved, in it's entirety, to the recently created Crikey Blogs platform. We're still waiting for a bright, shiny new banner but I've been familiarising myself with Wordpress and posting to the new site in recent days, so if you wondered why my posting frequency had dropped off, that's why. Corporate Engagement has been going since February 2004 (itself replacing an original blog I started with in November 2003 on the Blogger platform). Moving to Crikey is the next step in my blogging adventure and an exciting step it is too. Crikey is the first media site in Australia to fully embrace bloggers as bloggers rather than as journalists doing a bit of blogging on the side or outsiders being brought into provide some additional content. The Crikey blogs are real blogs managed as blogs by real bloggers. That's BIG I think. I hope other media sites, particularly the ABC and SBS, might eventually do the same. (update: I should also mention that Wotnews, formerly Plugger, is also very blogger friendly too). Aggregating blogs in this way and promoting them off a media site (although not an MSM platform) will give us bloggers access to much larger audiences and it will introduce many new readers to the potential of blogging. So here goes, I hope you will drop by to the new home of Corporate Engagement and give me your feedback. And if you have any suggestions for posts, please drop me an email ... McCain just badly misstated the history of Pakistan. For someone claiming extensive foreign policy knowledge, this is simply not acceptable. McCain said Pakistan was a failed state before President Musharraf came to power. That is not true. Musharraf took power in a military coup in 1999 when he diposed Nawaz Sharif - who recently participated in the latest election. The coup followed the 1999 war in Kashmir with India and was due to a power struggle with Sharif, not due to Pakistan being a "failed state." The United States did not welcome the Musharraf coup. Twenty-four percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-seven percent saw it as a draw. Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight. Thirty-two percent said their opinion of McCain got better. Insider Advantage / Poll PositionOpinions on who won the debate split almost evenly: 42 percent said they thought Barack Obama won the debate, 41 percent thought John McCain prevailed, and 17 percent were undecided.The poll of 411 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus five percent. The results were weighted by age, race, gender and political affiliation.CNN/Opinion Research Corp. found that 51 percent thought that Obama won, while 38 percent thought McCain did. Respondents were generally impressed: 57 percent said Obama did better than expected and 20 percent said worse, while 60 percent said McCain did better than expected and 20 percent said worse.
